We're All Dirty Hippies

Here's a fun game- Google search "Flagstaff"
Aside from lovely photos of the city and the peaks, you'll find a whole lotta hippie references.
From one website, I found this:
"Okay, imagine hipster + homeless person, and you get a Flagstaff hippie.
They ALWAYS have a dog. It's leash is made of twine.
They ALWAYS have a beard that is more groomed than a homeless person, but less groomed than a normal person.
They ALWAYS want to talk about ways that they are 'going green.'"

Yeah, sometimes we wear parkas and shorts at the same time. Sometimes, we don't wear shoes at all. Sometimes, we dread our hair. Sometimes, we smell, too, because we don't want to waste water showering. A lot of us have om and peace signs visibly tattooed on our bodies. We all have at least one tie-dyed something or other. Most of us like Bob Marley or the Beatles or both. We like animals and nature. A lot.

It's true what they say. We're dirty hippies.  Granolas. Tree huggers. We use alternative energy sources whenever possible, and we recycle, too. But not before we reduce and reuse in the most fabulous ways.

Like turning trash into art. This year marks the tenth annual Recycled Art Exhibition. If you haven't seen it yet, you're missing out big time. I'm only being partially biased when I say it's the best looking dump site I've ever seen.

Artists from all over Coconino County come together to promote recycling through this creative, fun and inspiring exhibition. It's no coincidence that the show lands on Earth Day each year. There's no better time to promote reducing, reusing, recycling, rethinking, and remaking into art. The exhibition opened with a rad circus performance by Circus Bacchus, and the show just keeps going.

Each Saturday during the Recycled Art Exhibition, the Coconino Center for the Arts will host artists for workshops and demonstrations. Come to watch these amazing artists, learn how they create their work, and have a chance to make your own art from recycled materials! This Saturday, from 11:00am-2:00pm, weaver Joanne Tallavoric teaches Scandinavian Weaving From Old Rags. Learn all about the traditional Krokbragd weaving technique. From 2:00-5:00pm, artist Dolores Ziegler teaches Greeting Cards for All Seasons. Learn how to make Iris greeting cards to use for all occasions. Both of these workshops, along with the rest, are completely FREE and open to all ages.

You can find lots of other Earth Day weekend events in Flagstaff by visiting the Flagstaff Visitor's Web page here. If you're reading this, I'm sure you're a dirty hippie, too. And you probably need to know where to drop off your plastic bags.
